Three women advocates from the Punjab and Haryana High court have announced to form a forum to offer voluntary legal help to women victims of crime in the Tricity in the wake of the recent gang rape of a 22-year-old woman. The advocates said they would also encourage more advocates to join them so that victims could get timely legal aid.
Meenakshi Choudhary, Maninder Kaur and Charanjeet Kaur said the victims find it difficult to get timely justice and are sometimes reluctant to report the matter owing to fear, ignorance and social obstacles.
Choudhary said, "Our forum will offer free legal assistance to victims right from filing the case. It will not only help them to get justice but also work to rehabilitate the victims by providing physical, mental and social support. The victims fail to get the desired support due to many reasons in today's times. The victim mostly remain a mute spectator to domestic violence and other crimes like molestation and rape due to ignorance of law and other apprehensions. In some cases the victims want to report the matter but can't not due to support and encouragement.
